The accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant has sent modest ripples of anxiety through the United States. Thirteen percent of all adults are "very concerned" that dangerous levels of radiation will reach this country, and a further 35% are somewhat concerned. Fifteen percent of adults are very concerned that events in Japan will damage the U.S. economy.

The Producer Price Index for finished goods rose 0.7 percent in March, seasonally adjusted, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported. This advance followed a 1.6-percent increase in February and a 0.8-percent gain in January. At the earlier stages of processing, prices received by manufacturers of intermediate goods climbed 1.5 percent in March and the crude goods index declined 0.5 percent. On an unadjusted basis, prices for finished goods moved up 5.8 percent for the 12 months ended March 2011, the largest year-over-year gain since a 5.9-percent advance in March 2010.

Mortgage rates were mostly lower, with the benchmark conforming 30-year fixed mortgage rate now 5.07 percent, according to Bankrate.com's weekly national survey. The average 30-year fixed mortgage has an average of 0.4 discount and origination points.

There were 3.1 million job openings on the last business day of February 2011, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported. The job openings rate (2.3 percent) increased over the month. The hires rate (3.0 percent) and total separations rate (2.9 percent) were little changed over the month. This release includes estimates of the number and rate of job openings, hires, and separations for the total nonfarm sector by industry and by geographic region.
