Member States must act to ensure that pension schemes can sustainably deliver an adequate income to the EU's growing number of retired people, despite the economic crisis, says a Parliament resolution adopted on Wednesday. Pension portability must also be addressed, as must inequalities faced by women and older workers, stress MEPs.

Data released today by Standard & Poor's for the S&P Healthcare Economic Composite Index indicates that the average per capita cost of healthcare services covered by commercial insurance and Medicare programs rose 6.06% over the 12-months ending December 2010. This is the seventh consecutive month where we have seen a deceleration in the annual rate of change for the S&P Healthcare Economic Composite Index. The annual rate of change is down 2.68 percentage points from its May 2010 peak reading.

Mortgage rates eased back following a big move up last week, with the benchmark conforming 30-year fixed mortgage rate falling to 5.16 percent, according to Bankrate.com's weekly national survey. The average 30-year fixed mortgage has an average of 0.42 discount and origination points.

The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) increased 0.4 percent in January on a seasonally adjusted basis, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Over the last 12 months, the all items index increased 1.6 percent before seasonal adjustment.

Real average hourly earnings for all employees fell 0.1 percent from December to January, seasonally adjusted, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. This decrease stemmed from a 0.4 percent increase in average hourly earnings, which was partially offset by a 0.4 percent increase in the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U).
