Industrial Production Down by 0.4% in Euro Area and in EU27 in January 2013

In January 2013 compared with December 2012, seasonally adjusted industrial production fell by 0.4% in both the euro area (EA17) and the EU27, according to estimates released by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. In December 2012 production grew by 0.9% and 0.8% respectively.

Euro Area GDP Down by 0.6% and EU27 Down by 0.5% - the Fourth Quarter of 2012

GDP fell by 0.6% in the euro area (EA17) and by 0.5% in the EU27 during the fourth quarter of 2012, compared with the previous quarter, according to second estimates published by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. In the third quarter of 2012, growth rates were -0.1% and +0.1% respectively.

Healthy Life Years in 2011

Healthy life years measure the number of years that a person can expect to live in a healthy condition. At birth, both women and men in the EU27 could expect to live 62 years in a healthy condition in 2011. At the age of 50, they could expect another 18 years living in a healthy condition, while at the age of 65, they could expect to have an additional 9 healthy life years.

Volume of Retail Trade up by 1.2% in Euro Area in January 2013

In January 2013 compared with December 2012, the volume of retail trade rose by 1.2% in the euro area (EA17) and by 0.9% in the EU27, according to estimates from Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. In December 2012 retail trade fell by 0.8% and 0.7% respectively.

In 2011, 40% of Treated Municipal Waste Was Recycled or Composted, up From 27% in 2001

In the EU27, 503 kg of municipal waste was generated per person in 2011, while 486 kg of municipal waste was treated per person. This municipal waste was treated in different ways: 37% was landfilled, 23% incinerated, 25% recycled and 15% composted, compared with 56% landfilled, 17% incinerated, 17% recycled and 10% composted in 2001.

Industrial Producer Prices up by 0.6% in Both Euro Area and EU27

In January 2013, compared with December 2012, the industrial producer price index rose by 0.6% in both the euro area (EA17) and the EU27, according to estimates from Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. In December 20123 prices fell by 0.2% in both zones.

Euro Area Unemployment Rate at 11.9% in January 2013

The euro area (EA17) seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate was 11.9% in January 2013, up from 11.8% in December 2012. The EU27 unemployment rate was 10.8%, up from 10.7% in the previous month. In both zones, rates have risen markedly compared with January 2012, when they were 10.8% and 10.1% respectively. These figures are published by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union.

Euro Area Annual Inflation Down to 2.0% in January 2013

Euro area annual inflation was 2.0% in January 2013, down from 2.2% in December 2012. A year earlier the rate was 2.7%. Monthly inflation was -1.0% in January 2013.

In 2011, 27% of Children Aged Less than 18 Were at Risk of Poverty or Social Exclusion

In the EU27, children are at greater risk of poverty or social exclusion than the rest of the population. In 2011, 27% of children aged less than 18 were at risk of poverty or social exclusion in the EU27, compared with 24% of adults (aged 18-64) and 21% of the elderly (aged 65 and over). Persons at risk of poverty or social exclusion are those who are at least in one of the following three conditions: at-risk-of-poverty, severely materially deprived or living in households with very low work intensity.
