Manufacturing labor productivity increased in 2006 in 15 of the 16 economies compared by the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics. The Republic of Korea and Taiwan had the largest productivity increases (+10.8 and +6.9 percent, respectively). The U.S.productivity increase of 2.4 percent placed it eleventh among the 16 economies compared, and was less than the average annual growth rate since 2000. Canada was the only country with no productivity growth.

In September, the Economic Sentiment Indicator (ESI) continued to decrease in both the EU and the euro area. It dropped by 2.3 points in the EU and by 2.8 points in the euro area, to 110.8 and 107.1 respectively. However, despite the declines observed in the third quarter, the indicator remains well above its long-term average in both areas.

Xinhua Finance and Market News International announced the September Xinhua Finance/MNI China Business Sentiment Survey. The results of the survey suggest that while overall business conditions remain stable at a relatively high level, companies have reined in production growth and are adding new productive capacity at a slower rate.

Fitch Ratings says, in its latest "Bank Systemic Risk report", that global credit growth is slowing, and concerns about rising bank systemic risk, highlighted in this and previous such reports, are increasingly likely to crystallise. "Fragilities that have built up but been masked by rapid credit growth are likely to be exposed as credit growth slows from now on," says Richard Fox, Senior Director in Fitch's sovereign team.
