The Coalition of Service Industries released a groundbreaking new study underscoring the enormous impact the service sector makes in the U.S. economy, and the importance of securing trade agreements that expand global markets for American services. The study found that the service sector represents the largest portion of U.S. employment and economic output - accounting for 93 million jobs and nearly 80 percent of U.S. private sector GDP - approximately $8.5 trillion.

During the summer holiday season 2006 – from June to September – 710 million nights were spent in hotels and similar establishments in the EU27, 2.3% more than in the summer season of 2005. This increase was almost entirely due to nights spent by non-residents, which were up by 4.7% to 340 mn, while the number of nights spent by residents in their own country was virtually unchanged at 370 mn. In summer 2005 compared to summer 2004, total nights spent in hotels increased by 5.3%, resulting from an increase of 4.3% for non-residents and 6.2% for residents.

The Economic Sentiment Indicator (ESI) showed signs of stabilisation in both the EU and the euro area in June, after hitting a fresh six-year high in May. The indicator remained practically unchanged in the EU at 114.9 points after 115 in May, and edged down slightly by 0.4 of a point in the euro area, to 111.7.

Despite the ‘Mexican Standoff’ between the government and Telstra on the issue of a regulatory holiday for new broadband infrastructure, broadband penetration is proceeding at high speed in Australia. By mid-2007 there were close to 4.5 million subscribers. In the residential market this means a broadband penetration of close to 64% in Internet households (46% of total households). In the business market this figure is over 80%.

U.S. video rental spending is well off its 2001 peak of $10.3 billion but revenue from online subscriptions is beginning to put some steam back into the rental engine, according to the new Online DVD Subscription: Reinventing Video Rental report from Adams Media Research. In that report AMR projects online subscription spending to increase by 41% to $1.9 billion in 2007.
