The Bloomberg Eurozone Retail Purchasing Managers' Index ("PMI(R)"), an indicator based on a mid-month survey of economic conditions in the euro area retail sector and providing data one month ahead of government issued figures, fell from 48.4 in May to 48.2 in June. The latest reading signaled a deterioration in retail sales performance for the second successive month, with sales falling at the fastest rate since January.

China’s cosmetics sector (skin-care and make-up products) has grown by 17% over the latest calendar year, rising from US$1.9 billion at the end of 2005 to US$2.2 billion by the end of 2006. TNS is predicting growth of between 15% and 20% in the US$ value of China’s cosmetics market during 2007, 2008 and 2009.

After jumping sharply between mid-May and mid-June, mortgage rates have now declined in each of the past two weeks. The average 30-year fixed mortgage rate retreated to 6.74 percent. According to Bankrate.com's weekly national survey of large lenders, the average 30-year fixed mortgage has an average of 0.26 discount and origination points.

About 45% of notifications to the EU's Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) in 2006 concerned products from third countries which were blocked at the border by EU control authorities when the risks were identified. EU Health Commissioner Markos Kyprianou presented the 2006 annual report on the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) which shows that notifications on risks to food safety fell by 5% in 2006 compared to 2005.

Unemployment rates were lower in May than a year earlier in 212 of the 369 metropolitan areas, higher in 134 areas, and unchanged in 23 areas, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported. Forty-three metropolitan areas registered jobless rates below 3.0 percent, while two areas recorded rates of at least 10.0 percent. The national unemployment rate in May was 4.3 percent, not seasonally adjusted.
