U.K. Internet Users Leading Consumers of Online Video

comScore released a study of video streaming in the U.K. The study showed that 80 percent of the U.K. online population (age 15 or older who have accessed the Internet from either a home or a work computer), initiated a video stream in April 2007, compared to 76 percent in the U.S., 79 percent in France, and 70 percent in Germany.

Postal Services should be Opened up to Competition by 2011

Remaining postal service monopolies in EU Member States should expire by 31 December 2010, two years later than the 1 January 2009 deadline proposed by the European Commission, said the Transport Committee on Monday. Full market opening should mean that national operators will no longer have a monopoly on mail below the maximum weight of 50 grams, known as the "reserved area". The full Parliament will vote on the draft directive in July.

WTO: Increase in New Anti-dumping Investigations

The WTO Secretariat reported that during the period 1 July-31 December 2006, the number of initiations of new anti-dumping investigations showed a modest increase compared with the corresponding period of 2005. However, the number of new measures applied continued to decline.

EU will Withdraw GSP Trade Preferences from Belarus over Workers' rights Violations

In December 2006 the EU warned that it would have to withdraw Belarus' trade preferences under the EU's Generalised System of Preferences (GSP) if Belarus did not comply with its International Labour Organisation (ILO) obligations relating to freedom of association for workers. On 15 June 2007, the ILO adopted its assessment that Belarus has not acted to ensure the protection of certain key labour rights related to freedom of association in Belarus. Belarus' GSP trade preferences will be therefore be withdrawn from 21 June 2007.

As consumer awareness grows and publishers release more content, worldwide mobile gaming end-user revenue will grow from $2.9 billion in 2006 to $9.6 billion in 2011, according to Gartner, Inc. Worldwide mobile gaming revenue is on pace to total $4.3 billion in 2007, a 49.9 percent increase from 2006.

When security and privacy concerns were raised about the use of contactless smart card technology in e-passports, travel documents, and contactless payments, it showed that the market still lacked a clear understanding of what smart card technology is able to do in terms of security and processing.
