The level of economic freedom in the world dipped slightly in 2009 according to the 16th annual Index of Economic Freedom, released by The Heritage Foundation and The Wall Street Journal. One reason: To help ward off recession, many governments launched unsuccessful attempts to spend their way to prosperity.

The Producer Price Index for Finished Goods moved up 0.2 percent in December, seasonally adjusted, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported. This rise followed a 1.8-percent advance in November and a 0.3-percent increase in October. At the earlier stages of processing, prices received by producers of intermediate goods rose 0.5 percent and the crude goods index moved up 1.0 percent. On an unadjusted basis, prices for finished goods advanced 4.4 percent in 2009, after falling 0.9 percent in 2008.

The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) released the Eastern Wind Integration and Transmission Study (EWITS). This unprecedented two-and-a-half year technical study of future high-penetration wind scenarios was designed to analyze the economic, operational, and technical implications of shifting 20 percent or more of the Eastern Interconnection’s electrical load to wind energy by the year 2024.

In 2009, the total investment in real estate development amounted to 3,623.2 billion yuan, up by 16.1 percent year-on-year. Of which, investment in commercial residential buildings reached 2,561.9 billion yuan, 14.2 percent of increase year-on-year, occupied 70.7 percent of the investment in real estate development.

Restaurant Industry Outlook Brightens in 2010 as Sales, Economy Are Expected to Improve

With the economic downturn easing, the restaurant industry is expected to show gradual improvement in 2010, according to the National Restaurant Association's 2010 Restaurant Industry Forecast. Industry sales are projected to reach $580 billion this year, a 2.5 percent increase in current dollars over 2009 sales. When adjusted for inflation, 2010 sales will be essentially flat, which is an improvement over the 1.2 percent and 2.9 percent negative growth in real sales that the industry experienced in 2008 and 2009, respectively.

E-commerce Accounted for 12% of Enterprises' Turnover in the EU27 in 2008

In January 2009, 93% of enterprises of ten or more persons employed had access to the internet in the EU27 and 82% of enterprises had a broadband internet connection. Among other uses, internet access enables enterprises to buy and sell products electronically: in the EU27 in 2008, 12% of enterprises' turnover was generated from e-commerce.

TD Bank Small Business Survey Reveals Optimism Despite Negative Impact of U.S. Recession

According to a recent survey conducted by TD Bank, America's Most Convenient Bank®, 87 percent of small business owners say their business will perform at least the same or better in 2010 compared with 2009, and 57 percent are cautiously optimistic that the new year will bring an end to the pain of the recession. A remarkable 92 percent of small business owners are considering proactive strategies to prepare for an economic upswing, with 36 percent expecting to see their business grow in 2010. TD Bank conducted the survey to gauge how the recession and other issues are affecting small businesses.
