Euro area (EA16) GDP increased by 0.4% and EU27 GDP by 0.3% during the third quarter of 2009, compared with the previous quarter, according to second estimates from Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. In the second quarter of 2009, growth rates were -0.1% in the euro area and -0.3% in the EU27.

The Economic Sentiment Indicator (ESI) rose once again in December to 92.0 (+4.1 points) in the EU and to 91.3 (+2.5) in the euro area. It has improved in both areas for nine consecutive months since its trough in March 2009, though it still remains below its long-term average.

The consumer electronics (CE) industry will generate more than $165 billion in U.S. shipment revenues this year, a slight increase from 2009, according to the semi-annual industry forecast released today by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)®. CEA President and CEO Gary Shapiro announced the forecast in his opening remarks at the 2010 International CES®, the world’s largest consumer technology trade show.

The Monster Employment Index edged down four points in December, amid a relatively mild seasonal fall in online recruitment activity. On a year-over-year basis, the Index is now down 12 percent, the mildest rate of annual decline seen during the past 18 months indicating slight stability in underlying employer demand for workers at the end of the year.

For the full holiday online shopping season, $29.1 billion was spent online, marking a 4-percent increase versus the same period last year. The season featured distinct periods of strong spending growth surrounding the Thanksgiving-Black Friday timeframe and the final shopping week leading up to Christmas.
