Charitable giving in the United States exceeded $300 billion for the second year in a row in 2008, according to Giving USA 2009. Donations to charitable causes in the United States reached an estimated $307.65 billion in 2008, a 2 percent drop in current dollars over 2007.

The global economic downturn has many venture capitalists altering strategies, including reducing investment levels in the short term, according to the 2009 Global Venture Capital Survey by Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu and the National Venture Capital Association. Fifty-one percent of the survey respondents are decreasing the number of companies in which they plan to invest and just 13 percent are increasing this activity.

On the last business day of April, job openings in the U.S. numbered 2.5 million, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported. The job openings level was at its lowest point since the series began in December 2000. The hires rate (3.1 percent) was unchanged in April and remained low.

A new report from the Junior Achievement Innovation Initiative (JAII) and Gallup shows that employers (those responsible for hiring decisions) and employees alike believe that America's workforce needs to become more "entrepreneurial" in order for the country to remain competitive in the global marketplace and that K-12 classrooms are the place to start teaching entrepreneurship. This is in line with President Barack Obama's call for "entrepreneurship" to be included with "problem-solving" and "critical thinking" as 21st century skills to be incorporated into education standards and assessments.

In May, the general level of consumer price index dropped 1.4 percent year-on-year. Of which, urban and rural area was down by 1.5 and 1.0 percent respectively; the price of foodstuff, non-foodstuff, consumable and services descended 0.6, 1.7, 1.4 and 1.3 percent respectively. The general level of CPI decreased 0.3 percent month-on-month; the price of foodstuff was down by 0.6 percent, of the total, fresh vegetable was dropping by 7.1 percent, while that of fresh egg surged 2.0 percent.

A key element being discussed as part of health reform - the creation of a health insurance exchange that would offer new forms of insurance pooling, combined with an individual mandate and guaranteed issue - would restructure the health insurance market and has major implications for the existing employment-based benefits system that provides the majority of Americans with health coverage, according to a study released by the nonpartisan Employee Benefit Research Institute (EBRI).
