Top analysts report that the United States has been in a recession for the past year, and no one knows that better than the self-employed and micro-business. Seventy percent of entrepreneurs consider their micro-business a career, one that presently supplies the main source of income to their households. According to data released by the National Association for the Self-Employed (NASE), their top concerns are going out of business, being forced to put off retirement, and an increased cost of living.

Mortgage rates fell again last week, hitting as low as 5.10 percent last Friday, after the government's decision to purchase mortgage-backed securities. The weekly average rates for 30-year fixed mortgages declined to 5.34 percent, down from 5.53 percent the week prior, according to the Zillow Mortgage Rate Monitor, compiled by leading real estate Web site Zillow.com(R).

The EP Agriculture Committee called for "immediate and continuous action" to ensure global food security. It believes the aid of EUR 1 billion that the EU has decided to give to developing countries should be accompanied by fresh investment in agriculture and it calls for mechanisms to be set up to ensure that sufficient global food stocks are available.

The Monster Employment Index France fell 15 points in November, resuming its downward trend following a slight correction in October. The banking, finance and insurance sector registered the sharpest fall in online job demand as the global financial crisis continues to evolve. Year-on-year the Index slumped 14 points, or 8 percent.

November’s slight increase in online job availability demonstrates that the German labor market is holding up remarkably well in the face of deepening economic concerns. Although the growth trend has gradually flattened during 2008, there were still more online job offerings in November than a year earlier as Germany continued to outperform most other markets in the Index.
