The European Commission called for a renewed commitment to social justice by proposing a new, holistic approach to tackling poverty and promoting inclusion of people furthest from the labour market. While the EU strategy for growth and jobs is showing good results, Europe needs to do more to realise its full potential and achieve greater social justice and economic cohesion. The new strategy for 'active inclusion', which is taking shape through a wide-ranging public consultation, is a key element of the European Social Agenda.

Nonfatal workplace injuries and illnesses among private industry employers in 2006 occurred at a rate of 4.4 cases per 100 equivalent full-time workers - a decline from 4.6 cases in 2005. Similarly, the number of nonfatal occupational injuries and illnesses reported in 2006 declined to 4.1 million cases, compared to 4.2 million cases in 2005. These findings were reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) of the U.S. Department of Labor.

The current account of the euro area balance of payments (b.o.p.) recorded a deficit of EUR 1.4 billion in the second quarter of 2007. Deficits were recorded for the group of “other countries” (i.e. non G-10 countries outside the European Union), Japan, the EU institutions and Switzerland. By contrast, the main surpluses were with the United Kingdom and the countries that joined the European Union in 2004 and 2007, while the current account balance with the United States was close to zero.
