The first estimate for the euro area (EA17) trade balance with the rest of the world in April 2011 gave a 4.1 bn euro deficit, compared with -0.7 bn in April 2010. The March 2011 balance was +1.6 bn, compared with +2.7 bn in March 2010. In April 2011 compared with March 2011, seasonally adjusted exports rose by 0.6% and imports by 1.1%.

In the construction sector, seasonally adjusted production rose by 0.7% in the euro area (EA17), but fell by 0.9% in the EU27 in April 2011, compared with the previous month. In March, production decreased by 0.1% in the euro area and increased by 2.3% in the EU27.

The Conference Board Leading Economic Index®(LEI) for China increased 0.2 percent in April to 154.5 (2004 = 100), following a 0.9 percent increase in March and a 0.1 percent decline in February. Two of the six components contributed positively to the index in April.

The number of persons employed in both the euro area (EA17) and the EU27 was stable in the first quarter of 2011 compared with the previous quarter, according to national accounts estimates published by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. In the fourth quarter of 2010, employment increased by 0.2% in the euro area and by 0.1% in the EU27. These figures are seasonally adjusted.
