The European Commission concluded that Malta has achieved a high degree of sustainable economic convergence with the euro area Member States and that it fulfils the necessary conditions to adopt the euro. On the basis of this positive Convergence Report, the Commission proposes to the Council that Malta adopts the euro on the 1st of January 2008.

The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) increased 0.6 percent in April, before seasonal adjustment, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported. The April level of 206.686 (1982-84=100) was 2.6 percent higher than in April 2006.

A new study reveals that 35% of the software installed in 2006 on personal computers (PCs) worldwide was obtained illegally, amounting to nearly $40 billion in global losses due to software piracy. Progress was seen in a number of emerging markets, most notably in China, where the piracy rate dropped ten percentage points in three years, and in Russia, where piracy fell seven percentage points over three years.

PayPal announced it has been granted a banking license for the European Union by the Commission de Surveillance du Secteur Financier (CSSF) in Luxembourg, effective July 2, 2007. Under this new charter, PayPal will be able to continue its European expansion by offering its services to more online merchants across Europe. In addition, PayPal will be moving its European headquarters to Luxembourg.

New research from TowerGroup finds that online banking is becoming the most powerful retail channel banks have ever deployed, outpacing everything from ATM to call centers and increasing in use at an annual rate of 27 percent. The long touted promise of online banking is now hitting its stride.

A Quick Poll released reveals that while virtually every nonprofit (95%) lists preservation of purchasing power as a key investing goal, less than half (47%) of those polled said their organization currently invests even 10 percent of its overall portfolio in inflation protected asset classes. The poll was designed to gain insight into how nonprofits prioritize inflation protection and what they are doing to manage against inflation.
