US: Metropolitan Area Employment and Unemployment in February 2007

Unemployment rates were lower in February than a year earlier in 249 of the 369 metropolitan areas, higher in 94 areas, and unchanged in 26 areas, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported.

CareerBuilder.com and USA TODAY released the results of their latest survey, conducted by Harris Interactive(R), tracking projected hiring trends for the second quarter of 2007. The survey, titled "Q2 2007 Job Forecast," was conducted from February 15, 2007 through March 6, 2007 of 2,591 hiring managers and human resource professionals and 6,823 workers in private sector companies.

The Hudson Employment Index(SM) climbed to 109.0 in March from 107.1 in February. Improved sentiment regarding personal finances and job satisfaction prompted the third consecutive monthly rise in worker optimism. The latest reading is nearly three points stronger than last March's Index of 106.2.

The EU has proposed to remove all remaining quota and tariff limitations on access to the EU market for all African, Caribbean and Pacific regions as part of the Economic Partnership Agreement negotiations. The offer covers all products, including agricultural goods like beef, dairy, cereals and all fruit and vegetables.

Inflation in the OECD area edges up to 2.1% in February 2007

In the OECD area, consumer prices rose by 2.1% in the year to February 2007, compared with 1.9% in the year to January 2007. On a monthly basis, the price level rose by 0.3% in February 2007 after 0.2% between December 2006 and January 2007.

EU: Volume of retail trade up by 1.2% in euro area

In February 2007, compared with February 2006, the volume of retail trade grew by 1.2% in the euro area (EA13) and by 2.8% in the EU27. Compared with January 2007, the retail sales index rose by 0.3% in the euro area and by 0.5% in the EU27.

According to figures released today by Standard & Poor's fourth quarter 2006 operating earnings for the S&P 500 increased 8.9% over the fourth quarter 2005, marking the first time that the index has failed to post double-digit earnings growth since the first quarter of 2002, eighteen quarters ago.
