The Monster Employment Index Europe edged up one point to a level of 130 in March, notching a second consecutive month of growth following a seasonal dip in January. The Index showed increased online recruitment activity in the Netherlands, Sweden and United Kingdom, while demand fell sharply in France and dipped slightly in Germany. Year-on-year, the Index is up 13 points.

The first-quarter growth in operating earnings for the world's most widely followed stock market index, the S&P 500, is expected to come in at its lowest level in five years, Standard & Poor's announced. First-quarter 2007 earnings are estimated at $21.77, or $195 billion in aggregate, below the $21.99 reported during the fourth quarter of 2006, but up 5.0% from the corresponding $20.75 posted during the first quarter of 2006.

The Chief Executives' Confidence Measure, which had improved to 50 in the final quarter of 2006, rose to 53 in the first quarter of 2007, The Conference Board reports in its latest survey of CEOs. A reading of more than 50 points reflects more positive than negative responses. The survey includes about 100 business leaders in a wide range of industries.

Nonfarm payroll employment rose by 180,000 in March, and the unemployment rate was essentially unchanged at 4.4 percent, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported. Employment increased in construction, retail trade, and health care. The number of manufacturing jobs continued to trend down. Average hourly earnings rose by 6 cents, or 0.3 percent, over the month.
