The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index, which had marginally increased in January, improved in February. The Index now stands at 112.5 (1985=100), up from 110.2 in January. The Present Situation Index increased to 139.0 from 133.9. The Expectations Index edged up slightly to 94.8 from 94.4 last month.

The Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) released the results of its latest annual survey on international operations of Japanese firms. According to the survey results, Japanese firms expect their sales and operating profits to expand 20% at home and 30% abroad, between FY2005 and FY2010. Firms expect sales and operating profits in Asia to grow nearly 40% by FY2010, which is higher than the 20% figure expected for both the Americas and European markets.

The Economic Sentiment Indicator (ESI) increased in both the EU and the euro area in February. The indicator increased by 1.3 points in the EU and by 0.5 of a point in the euro area, to 112.0 and 109.7 respectively.

The OECD’s annual compendium of tax data shows little change in levels of taxation on wage earners in different OECD countries, with Turkey, Poland and France levying the most on a single-earner married couple with two children on average earnings and Ireland, New Zealand and Iceland taking the least.

Today in Brussels at the "Growth and Jobs Summit" organised by the "Lisbon Council" think-tank, European Consumer Commissioner Meglena Kuneva called on EU political leaders to rally behind her drive to redefine EU Consumer policy so it most effectively contributes to two central EU goals - creating economic growth and employment as well as reconnecting Europe to its citizens.
