The proportion of women graduates in information and communications technology (ICT) in Europe is falling, especially compared to other regions of the world. To promote women's careers in ICT, the Commission presents today, on International Women's Day, the video diaries of 6 young women who were given the chance to accompany a successful female engineer or technologist for a day. These show the promising career prospects that are possible for women in ICT.

The Monster Employment Index jumped nine points to a level of 177 in February, demonstrating a strong, broad increase in online demand for workers across the United States. The sharp upturn in overall U.S. online recruitment activity last month pushed the Index to its highest level since its inception in October 2003. The Index’s year-over-year growth rate also edged higher to a total of 20 points or 13 percent, a moderate improvement from last month’s pace of growth.

"As a nation we buy even when economic conditions are stressed and our pocketbooks are squeezed. The remarkable resilience of the U.S. consumer during the 2001 recession provides a good example. Homeowners refinanced and tapped the equity in their homes to keep spending rising, even as employment and incomes declined. Persistently strong consumer spending among other factors should offset any additional drag coming from the housing and auto sectors. Prospects for real GDP growth is 2.1%," says Diane Swonk, chief economist of Mesirow Financial.
