Consumer confidence in the economy increased by half a point in August, according to figures released by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)® and CNET. Confidence in consumer electronics fell more than two points to 79.8, but remains higher over the same period a year ago.

The Pivot Conference released findings from its survey of 137 brand marketers and ad agency professionals that point to a significant investment in social media marketing programs in the next 12 months. Of the marketers surveyed, about two-thirds (63%) have already implemented social media marketing programs, and 87% plan to increase that investment in the next 12 months. Of the 37% of marketers that are not currently investing in social media, 62% plan to invest within one year.

In June 2010 compared with May 2010, the euro area (EA16) industrial new orders index rose by 2.5%. In May the index increased by 4.1%. In the EU27, new orders increased by 2.4% in June 2010 after a rise of 4.0% in May. Excluding ships, railway & aerospace equipment4, for which changes tend to be more volatile, industrial new orders grew by 1.6% in the euro area and by 1.8% in the EU27.

Based on the strong surge in lodging demand that occurred during the first half of 2010, Colliers PKF Hospitality Research (PKF-HR) now forecasts that the average U.S. hotel will achieve a 2.3 percent increase in net operating income (NOI) during 2010. This follows a 37.8 percent cumulative decline in profits experienced from 2007 through 2009, and is the first annual uptick in forecasted NOI since 2007.

Panda Security, the Cloud Security Company, announced the results of the United States edition of its second annual International Barometer of Security at small- and medium-sized businesses (SMBs). The study, which surveyed nearly 10,000 SMBs around the globe and more than 1,500 in the United States, revealed that 46 percent of U.S. SMBs have fallen victim to cybercrime, up two percent from last year's survey.

Forty percent of consumers report they are likely to test drive an electric vehicle, according to a new study of online American adults from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)®. The study, Electric Vehicles: The Future of Driving, suggests electric vehicles entice consumers with improved environmental quality and potential cost savings, but leave them with questions about battery life and convenience of battery charging.

Consumer Driven Health Plans (CDHPs) in the U.S. experienced continued growth this year – albeit at a slower rate than in 2009 – according to preliminary results released by United Benefit Advisors (UBA) from its 2010 UBA Health Plan Survey, the nation's largest health plan benchmarking survey, with 17,113 plans from 11,413, employers.

The Russian electricity industry is one of the largest in the world, providing numerous opportunities for equipment and services suppliers. Following a long period of underinvestment, the Russian power generation industry launched a wide-scale reform in 2003. By 2011, the industry should emerge in a fully liberalised state, offering a number of opportunities for strategic and portfolio investors, equipment manufacturers and service providers.
