Together with the adoption of the Communication "An EU Strategy for Youth - Investing and Empowering", outlining a new youth cooperation framework in the European Union, the Commission is also publishing a Youth Report. The Youth Report is a compilation of data, statistics and brief analyses on the situation of young people in Europe. It provides an overview of the situation in the EU Member States in a range of different areas and outlines as well the differences between countries.

President Obama may be getting positive ratings on his overall job performance (The Harris Poll®, April 23, 2009) but Americans are divided over his economic job performance. Just under half (49%) give him positive ratings and 51% give his economic job performance negative ratings. This is a slight improvement from last month when 53% gave him negative economic job ratings and 47% of Americans gave him positive ratings.

EU Member States have adopted a negotiating mandate for a new economic and free trade agreement between the EU and Canada. This agreement would go beyond current WTO commitments and reinforce the already strong bilateral trade and investment relationship. In 2008, trade in goods and services between the EU and Canada exceeded EUR 70 billion and the total stock of investment stood at over EUR 260 billion. Negotiations, which will be led by the European Commission, are expected to be launched at the EU-Canada Summit on 6 May in Prague.

The Conference Board Leading Economic Index™ (LEI) for the Euro Area increased 0.2 percent in March to 92.4 (2004 = 100), following a 0.2 percent decrease in February and a 0.7 percent rise in January. Positive contributions from the interest rate spread and the business expectations (services) index more than offset a negative contribution from stock prices.

The World Bank said it was mobilizing up to $3.1 billion this year in health financing to help poor countries battle threats to their social services during the global economic crisis. This effectively triples Bank support from $1.0 billion last year and will be used to strengthen health systems in poor countries, boost their performance in preventing and treating communicable diseases, and improving child and maternal health, hygiene and sanitation.

Six out of ten hospitals nationally are seeing a greater proportion of patients without insurance coming through their emergency departments, according to a new survey from the American Hospital Association. At the same time, nearly half of hospitals reported they have cut staff. Recent employment information from the Bureau of Labor Statistics confirms that hospital employment is no longer growing and that the number of mass layoffs for hospitals reported in February was more than double what it was a year ago.

After enjoying a decade of strong growth and poverty reduction, the countries of Eastern Europe and Central Asia (ECA) are now seeing the global economic and financial crisis push almost 35 million people back into poverty and vulnerability, or about one-third of the people that had escaped from it over the last ten years, the World Bank said today at its regular regional economic briefing at the World Bank/IMF Spring Meetings.
