Bankrate: Fixed Mortgage Rates Up Slightly

Mortgage rates inched higher this week, with the average 30-year fixed mortgage rate rising to 5.27 percent. According to Bankrate.com's weekly national survey, the average 30-year fixed mortgage has an average of 0.38 discount and origination points.

The Discover U.S. Spending Monitor jumped a record 4.7 points in April to 84.2 (based out of 100), as the number of consumers saying the economy was getting better rose 8 points to 23 percent. In three months this number went from a Monitor low 8 percent in February to a Monitor high in April.

MEPs Give Green Light to EU Economic Recovery Plan

The EU's economic recovery plan will invest €5 billion in energy projects, broadband internet infrastructure and rural development. MEPs gave the green light to investing €3.98 billion of the funds in gas and electricity infrastructure, offshore wind parks and carbon capture and storage projects. Parliament also backs allocating €1.02 billion to rural development measures.

Volume of Retail Trade Down by 0.6% in Euro Area in March 2009

In March 2009, compared with February 2009, the volume of retail trade decreased by 0.6% in the euro area (EA16) and by 0.3% in the EU27. In February retail trade fell by 0.3% and 0.8% respectively.
