The Deloitte Consumer Spending Index rose in February, once again driven by strong growth in real wages and a decline in energy prices. The Index attempts to track consumer cash flow as an indicator of future consumer spending.

EU Member States showed their support for new rules to reduce the electricity consumption of industrial motors - which will save the equivalent of Sweden's electricity consumption each year - during today's Ecodesign Regulatory Committee meeting. The Regulation is expected to create 40,000 new jobs and make electricity savings of €9 billion by 2020.

Regional and state unemployment rates were nearly all higher in January. Forty-nine states and the District of Columbia recorded over- the-month unemployment rate increases, while all states and the District of Columbia had higher rates than a year earlier, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported. The national unemployment rate rose from 7.2 percent in December to 7.6 percent in January and was 2.7 percentage points higher than a year earlier.

In its report on possible solutions to the challenges in relation to oil supply, Parliament tackles the EU's reliance on oil imports, international co-operation, price hikes and renewable energy, suggesting a shift to more carbon-neutral solutions. Parliament expresses doubts regarding the medium- and long-term suitability of first-generation biofuels as a substitute for oil and calls for increased efforts in researching synthetic fuels.

In February, the general level of CPI dropped by 1.6 percent, year-on-year. Of which, urban and rural area was down by 1.9 and 0.8 percent respectively; the price of foodstuff, non-foodstuff, consumable and services dropped 1.9, 1.2, 1.5 and 1.8 percent respectively. CPI kept general level over this January, month-on-month; the price of foodstuff was up by 0.8 percent, of the total, fresh vegetable surged 4.0 percent, while that of fresh egg declined 0.8 percent.

On the last business day of January, there were 3.0 million job openings in the United States, and the job openings rate was 2.2 percent, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported. The job openings rate fell in January, while the hires rate (3.3 percent) and the total separations rate (3.6 percent) were essentially unchanged.
