European Parliament Ensures Temporary Agency Workers Gain Equal Rights

The European Parliament adopted a directive on temporary agency work which enables temporary workers to be treated equally, from day one, with those of the employer company. However, following agreement reached in May this year between the social partners in the UK, agency workers will get the same pay and conditions as permanent staff after being employed for 12 weeks. This is the final stage in the process and Member States have a maximum of three years to transpose the directive.

The Leading Index for France Declined 0.3 Percent in August 2008

The Conference Board reports that the leading index for France declined 0.3 percent and the coincident index remained unchanged in August.

US Regional and State Employment and Unemployment in September 2008

Regional and state unemployment rates were generally little changed in September but up substantially over the year. Overall, 21 states
and the District of Columbia recorded over-the-month unemployment rate increases, 23 states registered decreases, and 6 states had no change, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported. Over the year, jobless rates were up in 47 states and the District of Columbia and down in 3 states. The national unemployment rate was un- changed in September at 6.1 percent but was up from 4.7 percent a year earlier.

China: National Real Estate Climate Index Decreased Slightly in September 2008

In September, the national real estate climate index was 101.15, 0.63 and 3.84 points lower than the previous month, and over the same period last year.

EU27 Current Account Deficit 30.9 bn euro in the Second Quarter of 2008

According to the latest revisions, the EU27 external current account recorded a deficit of 30.9 billion euro in the second quarter of 2008, compared with a deficit of 10.2 bn in the second quarter of 2007 and a deficit of 20.1 bn in the first quarter of 2008.

China: Consumer Price Index Kept Growth in September 2008

In September, consumer price index rose by 4.6 percent over the same period of the previous year. Of which, urban area and rural area was up by 4.4 and 5.3 percent respectively; the price of foodstuff, non-foodstuff, consumable and services expanded 9.7, 2.0, 5.7 and 1.2 percent respectively. CPI kept general level month-on-month; the price of foodstuff was down by 0.3 percent, of the total, fresh vegetable and fresh egg surged 1.1 and 5.1 percent, respectively.

Euro Area and EU27 Government Deficit at 0.6% and 0.9% of GDP Respectively

In 2007, the government deficit of both the euro area (EA15) and the EU27 fell compared with 2006, while the government debt increased in absolute terms. In the euro area the government deficit decreased from 1.3% of GDP in 2006 to 0.6% in 2007, and in the EU27 it fell from 1.4% to 0.9%. In the euro area the government debt to GDP ratio fell from 68.5% at the end of 2006 to 66.3% at the end of 2007, and in the EU27 from 61.3% to 58.7%.

China: Total Retail Sales of Consumer Goods Shot up in the Third Quarter
