The latest Bloomberg Euro-Zone Retail Purchasing Managers' Index ("PMI(R)"), based on a mid-month survey of economic conditions in the euro area retail sector, indicates a continuing contraction in euro-zone retail sales for the third consecutive month. While the PMI rose to a three-month high during August, at 47.7 it remains below the crucial 50.0 no-change mark.

Mortgage rates were lower for the second week in a row, with the average conforming 30-year fixed mortgage rate falling to 6.60 percent. According to Bankrate.com's weekly national survey of large lenders, the average 30-year fixed mortgage has an average of 0.39 discount and origination points.

The annual rate of growth of M3 decreased to 9.3% in July 2008, from 9.5% in June 2008. The three-month average of the annual growth rates of M3 over the period May 2008 - July 2008 declined to 9.6%, from 10.0% in the period April 2008 - June 2008.

Unemployment rates were higher in July than a year earlier in 338 of the 369 metropolitan areas, lower in 25 areas, and unchanged in 6 areas, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported. Eleven areas recorded jobless rates of at least 10.0 percent, while nine areas registered rates below 3.0 percent. The national unemployment rate in July was 6.0 percent, not seasonally adjusted, up from 4.9 percent a year earlier.

On many counts, the youth labour market in Norway is performing very well. The unemployment rate among young people aged 16-24 was 7.3% in 2007, 6 percentage points below the OECD average and the employment rate was almost 12 percentage points above the OECD average.
