In April 2008 most euro area average MFI interest rates on new deposits were higher than in the previous month. While the majority of euro area average MFI interest rates on new loans were basically unchanged, they rose by about 10 basis points in the case of loans to non-financial corporations at a floating rate or with an initial rate fixation period of up to one year.

The economic downturn is beginning to be felt in continental Europe, but much less so than in the US and UK. As in the US, retail e-commerce in Europe - especially in the UK - is generally faring better than offline retail. Recent indications of growth have been very positive in the UK and in the rest of Europe as well.

Fitch Ratings commented that global economic conditions are likely to be characterised by weaker growth and higher inflation for the remainder of the year. However, years of very benign economic conditions have generally enabled Asian banks to strengthen their balance sheets in terms of loans quality and capitalisation, which should hold them in good stead for the more challenging economic environment as the US and some European economies slow.

The Spherion(R) Employee Confidence Index rose 0.7 points to 46.9 in May, showing the first increase in nine months. The survey, conducted by Harris Interactive(R) on behalf of Spherion Corporation, reflects workers' increasing confidence in the economy, as more workers report that the economy is getting stronger in May.

The labor market continued to weaken in May. The unemployment rate increased by half a percentage point to 5.5 percent, and jobless rates rose for most major demographic groups. Over the month, nonfarm payroll employment continued to trend down (-49,000). Thus far in 2008, job losses have totaled 324,000. In May, employment declined in construction, manufacturing, retail trade, and temporary help services. Health care continued to add jobs.

The unemployment rate rose from 5.0 to 5.5 percent in May, and nonfarm payroll employment continued to trend down (-49,000), the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported. In May, employ- ment continued to fall in construction, manufacturing, retail trade, and temporary help services, while health care continued to add jobs. Average hourly earnings rose by 5 cents, or 0.3 percent, over the month.

The Industry Committee has confirmed its support for liberalisation of the gas market along the lines of a recent Commission compromise proposal, which aimed to address concerns of countries opposed to "full ownership unbundling" (the complete separation of gas suppliers from gas transmission networks) without going as far as the so-called "third option" supported by those countries.
