Fitch Ratings has said that the imminent change of the UK capital gains tax regime may lead to the first major test of performance for buy-to-let (BTL) mortgages. The UK BTL sector has grown rapidly and performance has been stable since the market's inception in 1996.

Fitch Ratings has said that housing- and consumer-led downturns in advanced economies will drive world growth to its lowest level in five years in 2008, despite robust growth in Brazil, Russia, China and India (BRIC) and other emerging markets. Fitch predicts GDP growth in 2008 to be 1% in the US, 1.3% in Japan, 1.4% in the UK and 1.7% in the euro area.

According to some analysts, the Japanese economy could be headed for a mild recession this year, following the release of a survey showing sentiment among big Japanese manufacturers has sunk to a four-year low. The Bank of Japan Tankan survey is seen as further evidence of a worsening economic outlook.

In March, the Economic Sentiment Indicator (ESI) rose by 1.7 points in the EU and decreased by 0.6 points in the euro area, to 102.0 and 99.6 respectively. Following a continuous decline since mid-2007, the indicator rebounded somewhat in the EU on the back of a sharp improvement in services confidence in the UK. Meanwhile, it weakened further in the euro area and now stands just below its long-term average.

Regional and state unemployment rates were little changed in February. Overall, 20 states and the District of Columbia recorded over-the-month unemployment rate decreases, 19 states registered increases, and 11 states had no change, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported.

The euro area (EA15) seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate stood at 7.1% in February 2008, unchanged compared with January. It was 7.6% in February 2007. The EU27 unemployment rate was 6.7% in February 2008, compared with 6.8% in January. It was 7.4% in February 2007.
