As Americans gear-up for tax day, many do not know which investments can help them save on their income taxes or defer paying them, according to a new survey by COUNTRY Insurance & Financial Services. New research from The Nielsen Company finds that half (49 percent) of U.S. consumers are reducing their spending to compensate for rising gas prices, up four points from June 2007. Consumers are also battling high gas prices by combining shopping trips and errands (70 percent), eating out less (41 percent) and staying home more often (39 percent).

The results of a recent survey of small-business owners found that the number one barrier keeping them from meeting their financial goals in 2008 is lack of access to working capital. In this most recent installment of the Capital Access Network (CAN) Small Business Barometer, decision makers at small businesses indicated that their own "credit crunch" outweighs all other business obstacles they will face in 2008 including taxes, staffing, seasonality and energy costs.

Sales volume and the number of transactions conducted at 10 of the largest U.S. retail Web sites rose 29 percent during the 2007 year-end holiday shopping period, according to data tracked by the Chase Paymentech Pulse Index, suggesting that online shopping provided one of the few bright spots in an otherwise sluggish period for the retail sector.

comScore, Inc. released its final study of the online shopping activity of U.K., French and German consumers during the 2007 Christmas season. This study tracked the number of visits to online retail sites each week for the complete period between October 29 and December 23, using data from the comScore World Metrix audience measurement service.

In November 2007 compared with October 2007, seasonally adjusted industrial production fell by 0.5% in the euro area (EA13) and by 0.3% in the EU27. In October production grew by 0.5% in both zones. In November 2007 compared with November 2006, industrial production rose by 2.7% in the euro area and by 2.6% in the EU27.

The demographic make-up of Europe is changing. We are getting older and the number of people of working age is decreasing. A study commissioned in 2007 on "Europe's Demographic Future" found that around 56 million immigrant workers could be needed by 2050 to compensate for this decline.

The active phase of the euro changeover is now nearly finished in Cyprus and Malta. Thanks to intensive and systematic preparations and to the active and enthusiastic participation of citizens, the euro has been introduced quickly but smoothly into the daily life of the Cypriot and Maltese populations and the former currencies have now nearly vanished from wallets. Drawing the lessons of the 2002, 2007 and 2008 changeovers, the Commission has adopted a new recommendation on the organisation of future euro changeovers.
