The results of the January 2009 bank lending survey indicate that in the fourth quarter of 2008 the net tightening of credit standards for loans to enterprises remained broadly at the high level of the previous quarter. In fact, more than half (52 percent) of chief financial officers (CFOs) surveyed recently stated that they are delaying or reconsidering their retirement plans. The majority (62 percent) who intend to extend their working years attribute the change in plans to the economy.

The EU and China are becoming more interdependent, says European Parliament in a report adopted by MEPs, which means that EU-China relations require greater co-ordination among the Member States and with the Commission. Noting an imbalance in bilateral trade between the two partners - notably through China's inobservance of sustainable development, environmental limits and WTO rules - MEPs call on China to meet its obligations and on the EU to provide assistance and promote co-operation.

Fitch Ratings said in a new report that the anticipated economic slowdown affecting Poland's economy, and more difficult and costly access to external funding in the form of bank loans and bonds, will negatively impact the Polish corporate sector in 2009. Another challenge is a marked depreciation of the Polish zloty against the euro and US dollar since September 2008, which has negatively impacted companies with substantial foreign currency-denominated debt that were not able to offset the zloty's depreciation with currency hedging.
