The Conference Board Measure of CEO Confidence, which had posted a slight increase in the third quarter, declined sharply in the fourth quarter of 2008. The Measure currently stands at 24, down from 40 in the third quarter (a reading of more than 50 points reflects more positive than negative responses). The survey includes about 100 business leaders in a wide range of industries.

Asia-Pacific was home to some 121 million 3G subscribers in 2007 and an estimated 158.4 million in 2008. By 2013, the region's 3G subscriber base is expected to top 564 million, accounting for about 18.2 percent of all mobile users. With 3G subscriber net additions in record numbers year-on-year, mobile operators are eager to monetize 3G external broadband devices, namely dongles and datacards, to complement their mobile broadband offerings.

The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) decreased 1.0 percent in December, before seasonal adjustment, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported. The December level of 210.228 (1982-84=100) was 0.1 percent higher than in December 2007.

The majority of middle class Americans want to do their part to use less energy, but are more likely to act if the change will save them money, according to a national survey on energy conservation released by the Burton G. Bettingen Foundation. Seventy-three percent of respondents indicated that they were concerned or very concerned about energy conservation. Nearly half (46%) indicated that they see energy conservation as a way to save money.
