The European Parliament debated the latest developments in the Russia-Ukraine-EU gas crisis with many group speakers stressing that Russia and Ukraine should solve their disputes rapidly without blaming one side or the other. EU citizens are suffering, MEPs said, due to a bilateral dispute. MEPs said that both Russia and Ukraine had lost credibility as reliable partners and the EU should therefore increase its efforts to diversity its energy supply mix.

The U.S. Import Price Index declined 4.2 percent in December, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported, following decreases in each of the previous four months. Export prices also fell for the fifth consecutive month, declining 2.3 percent in December after a 3.4 percent drop the previous month.

Retail sales have been dismal, but the real damage to profitability and viability was unprecedented deep discounting, according to Grant Thornton Corporate Advisory and Restructuring Services. Department stores performed the worst, with the steepest decline in same-store sales, while luxury-apparel stores saw declining sales as consumers traded down and reduced discretionary spending.

The majority of C-level executives (77 percent) surveyed for KPMG International, the global network of audit, tax and advisory firms, believe that the current level of infrastructure investment is insufficient to help sustain the long-term growth of their organizations. Only 14 percent of business leaders globally believe the infrastructure currently available to support their organizations is completely adequate.

U.S. employers will be required to contribute more than $108 billion into their defined benefit plans this year, according to an analysis by Watson Wyatt. Although that's roughly $16 billion less than employers would have had to contribute without the passage of a new pension funding relief law late last year, Watson Wyatt pension experts say employers will still need additional relief.
