The National Small Business Association released a report detailing how small business is faring in the recession, and things aren't going well. According to the NSBA 2008 Year-End Economic Report, 91 percent of small businesses surveyed over the last two weeks in December said the national economy today is worse off than five years ago, up significantly from 68 percent in August 2008.

Fitch Ratings says that recent interest rate cuts by central banks in Europe may be compounding difficulties for European CMBS investors. With commercial property markets in decline, one effect of falling interest rates on swap valuations is to increase effective deal leverage. To avoid the associated swap breakage costs, servicers may be deterred from taking swift remedial action on impaired loans.

As the global economy shifted in 2007 from relatively strong growth to deceleration and on to modest recession in early 2008, consumers cut back on their spending and turned to discount retailers in ever increasing numbers, according to a new report, "2009 Global Powers of Retail," from Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu in conjunction with STORES magazine.

The Conference Board Employment Trends Index fell further in December. The index now stands at 99.6, decreasing 1.6 percent from the November revised figure of 101.2, and down almost 16 percent from a year ago.

Chinese textile and clothing exports increased by 11% in the first six months of 2008 although EU imports from China rose by only 5.1% and US imports from China increased by just 0.7%. As a result, domestic output grew by a smaller margin than in the past. Textile imports fell, implying weaker activity in textile and clothing manufacturing although clothing imports soared by 25%.

Consumers are unwilling to compromise on the brands with which they feel the closest - personal care, personal communications technology; health and nutrition; and products for home and family use. In addition, more than 70 percent of consumers plan to embrace a more frugal, 'back to basics' lifestyle in anticipation of economic uncertainties ahead, reports the Econocurious Consumer Survey issued from media communications agency, UM.

Frustration with traveling has dropped off sharply, according to the latest installment of Access America’s Travel Frustration Index, a quarterly barometer of travelers’ angst. The results of the latest survey, conducted by Ipsos Public Affairs in December 2008, reveal that Americans’ consternation with just about all aspects of travel has dropped significantly when compared to data collected earlier last year, as well as during the same period in 2007.
