Energy efficiency programs in the United States could realistically reduce the rate of growth for electricity consumption by 22 percent over the next two decades if key barriers can be addressed, according to an analysis released by the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI). The potential energy savings in 2030 would be 236 billion kilowatt hours, equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of 14 New York Cities.

Consumers in emerging economies are more concerned and willing to take actions against climate change than those in developed countries, according to global research by Accenture. Although the economic crisis has not reduced worldwide concern about climate change, 53% of people in emerging economies claim to be extremely concerned about it against only a third (31%) in mature markets.

comScore, Inc. released its monthly analysis of U.S. consumer activity at the top online properties for December 2008 based on data from the comScore Media Metrix service. The holiday shopping season drove increased traffic to retail sites as consumers browsed merchandise and sought deals online. Shipping and Weather sites also saw gains as Americans eagerly anticipated the arrival of their packages and holiday guests.

Personal economic and social concerns are a growing worry for Europeans, says the latest Eurobarometer survey for the 2009 European elections. This survey, done during the financial crisis, also found a clear decline in collective concerns such as terrorism, immigration and climate change. Many more Europeans now know the election dates, although this is not yet reflected in their voting intentions.

The first estimate for the euro area (EA15) trade balance with the rest of the world in November 2008 gave a 7.0 bn euro deficit, compared with +2.3 bn in November 2007. The October 2008 balance was +0.5 bn, compared with +4.2 bn in October 2007. In November 2008 compared with October 2008, seasonally adjusted exports fell by 4.7% and imports by 2.5%.

On 1 January 2009, the total number of monetary financial institutions (MFIs) in the euro area stood at 8,350, a net increase of 463 units (5.9%) compared to one year ago. The net increase of 463 units (5.9%) was largely caused by a larger number of MFIs in Ireland (+449) and in Spain (+119). In addition, Slovakia increased the number of MFIs by 40 units when it joined the euro area on 1 January 2009. There are 10,476 MFIs in the European Union (EU).
