A workshop on the implementation of the EU's roaming regulation took place on Tuesday in the European Parliament. Hosted jointly by the Internal Market and Industry Committees, experts and MEPs made a largely positive assessment of the regulation's effects during the first months since its entry into force.

This was the key message of Monday's hearing on "Innovation and Technology for Climate Protection", attended by experts, MEPs and industry representatives.

Eurogroup chair Jean-Claude Juncker told MEPs on Tuesday of his concerns at rising inflation. He also warned against adopting a stance of "benign neglect" in the face of rapid changes in currency markets. Later, Economics Commissioner Joaquin Almunia also warned of risks ahead on growth and inflation when he spoke to MEPs.

Regional and state unemployment rates were generally little changed in October. Overall, 22 states and the District of Columbia recorded over-the-month unemployment rate increases, 17 states registered decreases, and 11 states had no changes, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported. Over the year, jobless rates were down in 25 states and the District of Columbia and up in 25 states. The national unemployment rate was unchanged in October at 4.7 percent.

Home values nationwide declined for the fourth consecutive quarter, down 5.7 percent year-over-year - the largest year-over-year decline in more than a decade, according to Zillow's Q3 2007 Home Value Report.

The 2007 holiday shopping season is off to a slow start but, according to the most recent Consumer Reports Holiday Poll, it will take off on Black Friday. Nearly a quarter (24%) of consumers plan to hit the stores on Black Friday - up four percent from the 20 percent that shopped on the day in 2006.

Between 2000 and 2006, EU27 exports of goods to the 10 ASEAN countries rose from 42 billion euro to 49 bn, while imports increased from 75 bn to 79 bn. The EU27 deficit in trade with ASEAN fell from 34 bn in 2000 to 29 bn in 2006, accounting for 15% of the total EU27 external trade deficit. ASEAN accounted for around 5% of the EU27's total external trade in goods in 2006.

The European Commission has set out a package of initiatives to modernise the European single market and to bring more benefits to Europeans, building on past successes. The single market has already helped create competitive companies, reduced prices, more choice for consumers and a Europe attractive for investors.
