The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index, which had decreased in March, retreated further in April. The Index now stands at 104.0 (1985=100), down from 108.2 in March. The Present Situation Index decreased to 131.3 from 138.5 in March. The Expectations Index declined to 85.8 from 87.9.

MEPs have adopted a legal framework designed to make cashless payments – such as card transactions, bank transfers and direct debits – simpler and cheaper, paving the way for the creation a single Euro payments area. A deal with the Council means the legislation will enter force at this first reading stage, giving the banking industry the time it needs to meet its 2010 target.

The euro area (EA13) industrial new orders index decreased by 0.7% in February 2007 compared with January 2007. The index fell by 0.1% in January and grew by 1.5% in December 2006. EU27 new orders remained stable in February 2007, after a decrease of 1.4% in January and an increase of 2.5% in December 2006. Excluding ships, railway and aerospace equipment industrial new orders grew by 0.5% in the euro area and by 1.8% in the EU27 in February 2007.

ChinaVenture recently issued the '2006 Venture Capital Report for the Chinese Market'. Statistics show that the total VC investment in the Chinese market was USD2.181 billion in 2006, with 63.3% for the TMT industry. Among the 99 VC/PE-backed exit deals, the exit type for 33% of the deals was overseas IPO. There were 41 newly raised funds in the Chinese VC market with a total financing of USD4.443 billion.

TransUnion and Edgar, Dunn & Company announced initial findings from the PaymentDynamics 2007 Preferred Payments Study on consumer payment preferences, attitudes and behavior. The 2007 study is the first such study to combine consumer credit risk characteristics with consumers' choices of all payment options, including cash, check, credit cards, debit cards, electronic payments and new online payment technologies.
