Euro area annual inflation was -0.2% in August 2009, up from -0.7% in July. A year earlier the rate was 3.8%. Monthly inflation was 0.3% in August 2009.

Counting down the hours until payday? You're not alone. As the economic downturn trudges on, many workers are struggling with household budgets. Six-in-ten (61 percent) workers report they always or usually live paycheck to paycheck just to make ends meet, up from 49 percent last year and 43 percent in 2007. This is according to a new nationwide survey of more than 4,400 workers by CareerBuilder. Three-in-ten (30 percent) workers with salaries of $100,000 or more report that they too live paycheck to paycheck, up from 21 percent in 2008.

Local currency bond markets in emerging East Asia grew rapidly in the first half of 2009 as governments continued to fund economic stimulus packages. Notably, corporate bonds have become a significant driver of overall market growth as the region recovers from global recession, according to the latest issue of the Asia Bond Monitor from the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

The Greenlining Institute reacted to a survey conducted by the Lombardo Consulting Group which shows that Americans are losing confidence in the health care reform process. The national poll found that an overwhelming number of poll respondents believe that "side deals" between Washington decision makers and the pharmaceutical industry have "seriously compromised efforts to enact real reform of the health care system."

Total hourly labour costs in the euro area (EA16) rose by 4.0% in nominal terms in the year up to the second quarter of 2009, compared with 3.6% for the previous quarter. In the EU27, the annual rise was 3.7% up to the second quarter of 2009, compared with 1.3% for the previous quarter.
