The average real wage increase for European workers fell from 3.6% in 2007 to 1.3% in 2008, according to new data published by Eurofound’s European Industrial Relations Observatory (EIRO). The annual update on pay developments in Europe 2008 recorded sizeable differences between EU Member States, with the rate of real increase falling sharply, and the nominal rate dropping only slightly. Wide differences emerge, however, between the various groups of countries within the EU, in terms of the level of real wage increases, with a broad east-west split.

comScore, Inc. released the results of a study of visitation to online retail sites in France. The report revealed that 26.7 million people in France visited an online retail site in July 2009, an increase of 21 percent on the previous year, significantly higher than the 5-percent average growth in the retail category across Europe.

The VocaLink Take Home Pay Index rose by 0.7% to show 2.0% annual wage growth in August, the greatest one-month increase since February 2007. The figures are now back to the same levels seen in March this year, when the VocaLink Take Home Pay Index was in the midst of a six-month cycle of steadily falling wage growth. Economists see this turnaround of wage growth as an indication that the UK may be pulling out of recession.

Nonfarm payroll employment continued to decline in August (-216,000), and the unemployment rate rose to 9.7 percent, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported. Although job losses continued in many of the major industry sectors in August, the declines have moderated in recent months.

The Conference Board Annual Salary Increase Budgets Survey, released one week before Labor Day, reports the lowest yearly forecast for company salary budgets since the survey began 25 years ago. The 2010 median forecast salary increase budget is 3.00 percent in all employee categories, down a half percent from the previous year.

The Spherion Employee Confidence Index registered at its highest level since December 2007, increasing 3.2 points to 49.9 in August. The Index, which measures workers' confidence in their personal employment situation and optimism in the economic environment, reveals that a higher percentage of U.S. workers are confident in the strength of the economy. Other key indices remained stable or showed slight increases from July's results.

The factors contributing to Fitch Ratings’ Negative Outlook for the global insurance industry are unlikely to improve enough in the near term to allow for a revision to a Stable Outlook. In a report Fitch describes the signs it will look for to signal an Outlook improvement including the strength of the economic recovery, improved capital access and financial flexibility and greater certainty regarding investment valuations.

comScore, Inc. released a study of U.S. online display advertising on social networking sites in June 2009, based on data from the comScore Ad Metrix service. The study showed that social networking sites accounted for more than 20 percent of all display ads viewed online, with MySpace and Facebook combining to deliver more than 80 percent of ads among sites in the social networking category.
