The results of the analysis indicate that while broadband penetration is much higher in the metropolitan and micropolitan areas, broadband has experienced the most significant gains in rural areas during the past two years.

In June 2009 compared with May 2009, the euro area (EA16) industrial new orders index rose by 3.1%. In May the index decreased by 0.5%. In the EU27 new orders fell by 0.4% in June 2009, after rising by 0.5% in May. Excluding ships, railway & aerospace equipment, for which changes tend to be more volatile, industrial new orders grew by 1.9% in the euro area and by 1.1% in the EU27.

Twenty-six states reported over-the-month unemployment rate increases, 17 states and the District of Columbia registered rate decreases, and 7 states had no rate change, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported. Over the year, jobless rates increased in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. At 9.4 percent in July, the national unemployment rate was little changed from June, but was 3.6 percentage points higher than a year earlier.
