Greenpeace welcomed crucial vote on renewable energy legislation at the European Parliament as an encouraging step in the right direction. Members of Parliament (MEPs) have demonstrated resolve in supporting the broad uptake of clean renewable energy sources, but are only slowly putting the brakes on the rush towards unsustainable biofuels, the organisation said.

Europeans are highly concerned about climate change and clearly willing to take action against it. A majority of Europeans believes that the European Union's targets for reducing emissions of greenhouse gases and increasing the share of renewable energy by 2020 are about right or even too modest. However, a significant proportion of people feel poorly informed about climate change and ways to help fight it.

By 2015, at least 5% of all road transport fuels should come from renewable sources, says a co-decision report approved by Parliament's Industry Committee on Thursday. In amending a draft directive on renewable energies, the committee also tightened up sustainability criteria for biofuels and introduced flexibility mechanisms to allow Member States to achieve the 2020 renewables targets jointly.

Although the calendar indicates the end of summer is quickly approaching, it appears consumer confidence may be heating up, according to the most recent results of the RBC CASH (Consumer Attitudes and Spending by Household) Index, which advanced for the second consecutive month. Overall consumer confidence climbed 35 points to stand at 69.2, compared to 33.8 in August.

Mortgage rates fell dramatically with the announcement of a government takeover of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. According to Bankrate.com's weekly national survey, the average conforming 30-year fixed mortgage rate plunged from 6.55 percent to 6.15 percent.

An own-initiative report on a European Commission proposal to step up efforts to combat undeclared work was approved by a big majority in the EP Employment and Social Affairs Committee on Wednesday. Undeclared work, which in some Member States accounts of 20% of GDP, is a worrying feature of Europe's labour markets, say MEPs.

In the wake of economic and demographic shifts, 82 percent of European bankers feel that external factors such as the credit crisis will increasingly determine the future of their industry, more so than internal changes they can initiate. The findings come from a new survey commissioned by SAP AG and conducted by Novametrie, polling leading banking officials and external industry observers - economists and academics - on the future of banking over the next 10 years in light of the current environment.

In August, consumer price index rose by 4.9 percent over the same period of the previous year. Of which, urban and rural area was up by 4.7 and 5.4 percent respectively; the price of foodstuff, non-foodstuff, consumable and services expanded 10.3, 2.1, 6.0 and 1.4 percent respectively.

Regulatory reforms are gaining momentum worldwide, reaching record numbers this year, finds Doing Business 2009 - the sixth in a series of annual reports published by IFC and the World Bank. The new report identifies 239 reforms between June 2007 and June 2008 that make it easier to do business in 113 economies.
