A Commission proposal to promote clean and energy-efficient road transport by obliging public authorities to consider not only the cost, but the environmental impact, of the vehicles that they plan to purchase was backed by the Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety on Tuesday. MEPs want the "green award" environmental criteria, including fuel costs, to become mandatory as soon as 2010, but also to exclude certain vehicles from the proposal.

In April 2008 compared with March 2008, the euro area (EA15) industrial new orders index rose by 2.5%. In March the index fell by 1.2%. In the EU27 new orders grew by 3.6% in April 2008 after declining by 1.0% in March. Excluding ships, railway & aerospace equipment industrial new orders increased by 2.2% in the euro area and by 1.6% in the EU27.

JupiterResearch has found that the number of worldwide online users will increase 44 percent between 2007 and 2012, reaching 1.8 billion users. By 2012, one quarter of the worldwide population will access the Internet on a regular basis, as indicated in a new report Worldwide Online Population Forecast, 2007 to 2012, published by JupiterResearch.

Xinhua Finance eziData China Consumer Confidence Index (CCCI) was updated today, with the survey results showing that although Chinese people in June were faced with a series of negative factors such as continuous aftershocks of the Wen Chuan earthquake, the financial crisis in Vietnam, and a re-falling stock market, consumer confidence did not fall but inched up by 0.2 point to 95.1.

Foreign direct investment (FDI) outflows from OECD countries in 2007 leapt to a record USD 1.82 trillion from USD 1.2 trillion in 2006 but are projected to fall sharply in 2008, according to estimates from the OECD. If a slowdown in merger and acquisitions observed in the first half of 2008 continues, FDI outflows could fall to USD 1.14 trillion.

The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index, which had declined in May, declined even further in June. The Index now stands at 50.4 (1985=100), down from 58.1 in May. The Present Situation Index decreased to 64.5 from 74.2. The Expectations Index declined to 41.0 from 47.3 in May.
