The Legal Affairs Committee wants the Commission to propose new rules so that companies are not left in the dark on the investment policies of hedge funds or private equity investors who buy up their shares. They also want EU-wide measures to prevent asset stripping of companies targeted by private equity investors, and for much more light to be shed on pay and bonus packaged for fund managers.

Following a series of meetings between MEPs and the Slovenian Presidency of the Council, the two sides have agreed details of how to include aviation in the EU Emissions Trading System. The compromise agreement reached yesterday still needs to be formally endorsed by the full Council and put to a second reading vote at Parliament's July plenary session in Strasbourg.

Fixed mortgage rates took a breather, with the average conforming 30-year fixed mortgage rate holding at 6.62 percent. According to Bankrate.com's weekly national survey of large lenders, the average 30-year fixed mortgage has an average of 0.4 discount and origination points.

Jean-Claude Trichet told MEPs on Wednesday that it was “possible” a small increase in interest rates would be made next week to ensure inflationary expectations remained anchored. The European Central Bank President also said speculation was not the “major culprit” behind rising oil and food prices.
