In April, the Economic Sentiment Indicator (ESI) decreased by 3.8 points in the EU and by 2.5 points in the euro area, to 98.1 and 97.1 respectively. The fall in the EU indicator more than offset the rebound registered in March. In both regions, the ESI now stands below its long-term average.

The euro area (EA15) seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate stood at 7.1% in March 2008, unchanged compared with February. It was 7.5% in March 2007. The EU27 unemployment rate was 6.7% in March 2008, also unchanged compared with February. It was 7.3% in March 2007.

Many U.S. homeowners continue to weather the current credit crunch and real estate market conditions, as the number of severely delinquent mortgage accounts increased 15 percent in one year, according to a National Score Index(R) study conducted by Experian Consumer Direct(SM), the leading provider of online direct-to-consumer credit reports, scores and monitoring products.

Consumer prices in the OECD area rose by 3.5% in the year to March 2008 compared with 3.4% in the year to February 2008. On a monthly basis, the price level rose by 0.7% in March, compared with 0.3% in February.

Unemployment rates were higher in March than a year earlier in 309 of the 369 metropolitan areas, lower in 40 areas, and unchanged in 20 areas, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported. Fourteen areas, 12 of which are located in California, recorded jobless rates of at least 10.0 percent, while 9 areas registered rates below 3.0 percent. The national unemployment rate in March was 5.2 percent, not seasonally adjusted, up from 4.5 percent a year earlier.

Fitch Ratings has said that despite the current market conditions and lack of investor appetite, the continental European structured finance market has remained surprisingly active during the first quarter of 2008, mainly driven by the possibility to post structured finance notes as repo collateral with central banks. During Q108, 23 transactions totalling EUR22.8bn (excluding CDOs of cedulas) were issued.

Xinhua Finance eziData China Consumer Confidence Index (CCCI) was updated, with the survey results showing that, under the pressure of unrelieved rising general prices and a fast falling stock market, Chinese consumer confidence failed to maintain the rebounding trend seen in the month before and fell again by 1.4 points in April to hit a new low of 94.9 since the survey started in April 2007.

The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index, which had declined sharply in March, fell further in April. The Index now stands at 62.3 (1985=100), down from 65.9 in March.
