Demand for outsourcing in Asia-Pacific grew strongly in the first half of 2007, compared with the same period last year, according to the latest Quarterly Index from sourcing advisers TPI. The total value of new (as opposed to renewed or restructured) outsourcing contracts in the US$25 million plus bracket - where most significant outsourcing activity occurs - is US$5.4B, an increase of 100% on the first half of 2006.

Merchandise trade exports in the Group of Seven countries rose by a seasonally-adjusted 0.9% in the first quarter of 2007 compared with the previous quarter. Import volume growth picked up by 1.5%, driven largely by German domestic demand. On a year-on-year basis, G7 trade volumes continued to grow, with exports 3.4% higher and imports up 4.1%.

In the latest indication that the housing market remains in a correction phase, housing starts rose 2.3 percent in June to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.467 million following downward revisions for the previous two months, the Commerce Department reported. Building permits, which generally are a harbinger of future building activity, were down sharply last month for both single-family and multifamily construction.

The Producer Price Index for Finished Goods decreased 0.2 percent in June, seasonally adjusted, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S.Department of Labor reported. This decline followed advances of 0.9 percent in May and 0.7 percent in April. At the earlier stages of processing, prices received by producers of intermediate goods rose 0.5 percent in June after increasing 1.1 percent in the prior month, and the crude goods index moved up 0.3 percent following a 2.0-percent advance in May.
