The European Commission has announced a public consultation on responsible nanosciences and nanotechnologies research. The consultation will provide input for a Recommendation to the Member States on a possible Code of Conduct for this emerging area of science, which the Commission will put forward later this year.

81 Million People in U.S. Watch Broadband Video

An estimated 81 million people, or 63% of the 129 million people who access the Internet over broadband in the U.S., watch broadband video at home or at work. This number increased from 70 million in September 2006 to 81 million in March 2007, a jump of 16% in just six months.

Asia-Pacific Sees 100% Increase in New Outsourcing Deals

Demand for outsourcing in Asia-Pacific grew strongly in the first half of 2007, compared with the same period last year, according to the latest Quarterly Index from sourcing advisers TPI. The total value of new (as opposed to renewed or restructured) outsourcing contracts in the US$25 million plus bracket - where most significant outsourcing activity occurs - is US$5.4B, an increase of 100% on the first half of 2006.

G7 Merchandise Trade Growth Remains Sluggish in First Quarter 2007

Merchandise trade exports in the Group of Seven countries rose by a seasonally-adjusted 0.9% in the first quarter of 2007 compared with the previous quarter. Import volume growth picked up by 1.5%, driven largely by German domestic demand. On a year-on-year basis, G7 trade volumes continued to grow, with exports 3.4% higher and imports up 4.1%.

US Housing Market: Permits Down Sharply

In the latest indication that the housing market remains in a correction phase, housing starts rose 2.3 percent in June to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.467 million following downward revisions for the previous two months, the Commerce Department reported. Building permits, which generally are a harbinger of future building activity, were down sharply last month for both single-family and multifamily construction.

The Commission has adopted a strategy favouring the take-up of mobile TV across the 27 EU Member States. The Commission urges Member States and industry to facilitate and accelerate the deployment of mobile TV across Europe and to encourage the use of DVB-H as the single European standard for mobile TV.

US: Producer Price Index in June

The Producer Price Index for Finished Goods decreased 0.2 percent in June, seasonally adjusted, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S.Department of Labor reported. This decline followed advances of 0.9 percent in May and 0.7 percent in April. At the earlier stages of processing, prices received by producers of intermediate goods rose 0.5 percent in June after increasing 1.1 percent in the prior month, and the crude goods index moved up 0.3 percent following a 2.0-percent advance in May.
